‘We have failed’: Paris reels after thieves stole ‘priceless’ jewelry from the Louvre museum in broad daylight

The iconic museum was hit by a heist that lasted seven minutes.

  • Paris’ Louvre remained closed a day after a 7-minute heist of “priceless” jewelry, officials said.
  • France “failed,” the justice minister said, as thieves used a freight elevator to break in.
  • Paris prosecutor says 60 investigators are on the case, with reopening expected in “coming days.”

Paris’ Louvre Museum remained closed on Monday following a seven-minute jewelry heist that has shocked France.

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said that the state had “failed” to protect one of its most famous landmarks after thieves used a truck and a freight elevator to steal “priceless” jewels from the museum’s Galerie d’Apollon on Sunday morning.

Speaking on France Inter radio on Monday morning, Darmanin said: “We cannot completely secure all locations, but what is certain is that we have failed, since it is possible to set up a freight elevator in the middle of a Paris street, lift people up in a matter of minutes to steal priceless jewelry, and give France a terrible image.”

“These people will be arrested,” he added.

Later on Monday morning, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau told BFM TV that around 60 investigators had been mobilized to track down the thieves, adding that the authorities have “total determination” to recover the stolen jewels.

Without specifying a timeline, Beccuau said she was confident that the museum “will be able to reopen in the coming days,” as technical inspections at the site now appeared to be complete.

French interior minister Laurent Nuñez told France Inter radio on Sunday afternoon that the thieves had gained access to the museum’s Galerie d’Apollon early that morning, using a truck with a lift and an angle grinder to breach a window.

They then targeted several display cases before escaping on motor scooters, he said.

“They stole jewelry that I won’t list, as I believe there is a criminal investigation underway, but which is jewelry that has real heritage value and is actually priceless,” Nuñez said, adding that the heist lasted around seven minutes in total.

In a post on X on Sunday evening, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the theft, calling it “an attack on a heritage we cherish because it is our history” and pledging to recover the works and bring those responsible to justice.

Macron added that the Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance project, launched in January, includes enhanced security measures “to ensure the preservation and protection of what constitutes our memory and our culture.”

Culture Minister Rachida Dati said on Sunday afternoon that no injuries had been reported and that she was at the scene with museum staff and police.

According to the Louvre’s website, the Galerie d’Apollon houses the French Crown Jewels and hardstone vessels collected by the kings of France.

This is a developing story.
