Suspects in Louvre jewelry heist arrested, authorities say

The iconic museum was hit by a heist that lasted seven minutes.

  • French police have made a number of arrests as part of an investigation into the Louvre jewelry heist.
  • The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrests on Sunday.
  • It said one of those taken into custody had been attempting to leave France from Roissy airport.

Suspects in a daring heist at Paris’ Louvre Museum have been arrested, the Paris prosecutor said on Sunday.

In a press release, Laure Beccuau said the suspects had been taken into custody on Saturday evening following a weeklong manhunt.

Beccuau, who did not specify exactly how many people had been arrested, said one of the suspects had been attempting to leave France from Roissy airport.

French authorities had launched an investigation after an audacious daylight robbery saw thieves break into the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon and make off with several pieces of “priceless” jewelry last Sunday.

Beccuau told BFM TV on Monday that around 60 investigators had been mobilized to track down the thieves, adding that authorities had “total determination” to recover the stolen items, which include royal jewels from the First and Second French Empires.

French interior minister Laurent Nuñez previously told France Inter radio that the thieves had gained access to the museum using a truck with a lift system and an angle grinder to breach a window.

They then targeted several display cases before escaping on motor scooters, he said.

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said that the state had “failed” to protect one of its most famous landmarks.

Speaking on France Inter radio on Monday morning, Darmanin said: “We cannot completely secure all locations, but what is certain is that we have failed, since it is possible to set up a freight elevator in the middle of a Paris street, lift people up in a matter of minutes to steal priceless jewelry, and give France a terrible image.”

“These people will be arrested,” he added.
